The Monopile Upending Frame (MUF) was designed and supplied by IHC Gusto BV to MPI’s specification to facilitate the handling of large offshore piles from the horizontal transportation position to vertical without the need for a large capacity crane.

The pile is inserted into the MUF (using strand jacks or trailers) to a position where the centre of gravity is just beyond the hinge point and is gripped by hydraulic cylinders.

The pile is then rotated in the upending frame under its own weight controlled by winches. Once vertical the pile can be lowered to the sea bed by jacking down the installation vessel (if possible) or releasing the grips.
