North Hoyle Wind Farm
Monday 10 August 2009
MPI Offshore personnel were involved in the first UK offshore windfarm project, North Hoyle situated of the North Coast of Wales.

The Resolution jack-up vessels owners, Mayflower Energy were awarded a contract with Vestas as a consortium to engineer, supply, install and commission the 30 sets of components and subsea cabling for the offshore components for the North Hoyle.
The Port of Mostyn was used as the onshore base for this project, and final assembly of components and loadout onto transportation vessels were carried out by the company's management, supervision and labour.
The companies scope comprised of the following main offshore components:-
- 30 sets of transition pieces, weighing 75te
- 30 sets of WTG components
- Array cabling - 27 cables
- Export Cabling - 2 cables 11 & 13km in length
- Termination and testing of the offshore switchgear, array and export cabling
- Commissioning of the windfarm distribution system from the onshore switchroom to the offshore field location
The company chartered various installation and transportation jack-up vessels, tugs and other support vessels from a number of marine companies. These vessels were used to install the components circa 6 miles offshore from the North Wales coast, starting in Summer 2003 Two number transition pieces were transported on each trip, using a self-propelled jack-up. For the WTG phase a towed jack-up was used to transport 2 number sets of WTG components, with the nacelles ready assembled into 'bunny ears' formations. The last 3 WTG sites were completed by the Resolution jack-up vessel in early 2004.
