Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 23 September 2020 – Van Oord’s Deep Dig-It trencher crossed the busy shipping route Rotterdam Maasmond successfully and is on its way to offshore Alpha jacket in the Hollandse Kust (zuid) wind farm area. TenneT is building the Hollandse Kust (zuid) offshore grid to connect new offshore wind farms. 4 cables will have to be buried into the North Sea seabed for this purpose. For the first 10 kilometres of the cable route, these cables will have to be buried more than 5 metres into the seabed in order to cross the busy shipping route Rotterdam Maasmond.

[text] =>

The Van Oord-Hellenic Cables consortium will be installing 4 subsea 220 kV AC cables that will connect 2 offshore platforms to the onshore electricity grid. The first 2 cables to the Alpha platform will be installed this year. The other 2 cables, meant for the Beta platform, will follow in 2021. The last few days the preparatory work has been completed. With the support of MPI Resolution, the cable was pulled ashore via a direct drill to the new transformer substation that is being built on the Maasvlakte. From this point, the cable with a total length of 42 kilometres to the wind zone Hollandse Kust (zuid) will be laid by the Deep Dig-It, a large remote-controlled trencher.

Deep Dig-It
Van Oord's Deep Dig-It is a so-called ‘Tracked Remotely Operated Vehicle’ (TROV) that drives unmanned over the seabed and creates a deep trench for the cables by liquefying the seabed. At the same time, the trencher inserts the cables into the trench and seals them again into the seabed. This new trencher is one of the largest and most powerful of its kind and can bury cables more than 5 metres deep in very hard soil. The Deep Dig-It is controlled at Van Oord's offshore installation vessel MPI Adventure, which is also equipped with a crane to launch and take out the Deep Dig-It.

Hollandse Kust (South) grid connection
The Hollandse Kust (zuid) offshore wind farm is located 22 kilometres off the coast of the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland. The sea cables connect the two offshore platforms with the Maasvlakte high-voltage substation and the Randstad 380 kV South ring.

The 1,400 MW grid connection will be completed in 2022 and will eventually provide electricity for 1.6 million households. The offshore wind farm contributes significantly to the Dutch government's objective of having a total of 3.5 GW installed offshore wind energy capacity by 2023. With the commissioning of Borssele Alpha and Beta this year, the first 1.4 GW has been realised.

In Spring 2020, Siemens Gamesa contracted MPI Offshore to carry out a main bearing exchange involving jack-up operations at a specific wind turbine.

Offshore installation and maintenance vessel MPI Resolution has been deployed to execute the works and in only three operational days, the bearing was safely exchanged. This included removing and reinstallation of the three blades to deck to allow access to the main bearing.

The success of this project is testament to the teams from both parties onboard the vessel who worked hand in hand to create this successful outcome.

At this moment the vessel is moored in the Port of Teesside readying itself for her next assignment.

How does it work?

The vessel sails to the site location with three repaired and/or new blades. The damaged blades will be replaced by another blade and brought back on board. There, the blade will be repaired and upgraded. The repair consists of applying ‘shells’ that are glued to the blades. When finished it will be installed at the next location. The expectation is that with this repair the blades can last until the end of the expected life of the park.

After the blade repair and upgrade campaign, the MPI Resolution will continue its work for the five-year maintenance contract for the major components exchange at the Prinses Amaliawindpark.

Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 2 October 2018 – Van Oord completed the acquisition of MPI Offshore, a specialist offshore wind installation contractor, from Vroon Group. By acquiring MPI Offshore, Van Oord will further strengthen its global wind organisation and in particular its position in the UK wind market.

The acquisition includes the MPI Offshore organisation in Stokesley (United Kingdom), the vessels MPI Adventure and MPI Resolution, and associated crew.  A total of hundred people, both office staff and crew, will be joining the Van Oord UK organisation. Van Oord also acquired project contracts related to the vessels, i.e. offshore wind farms London Array, Prinses Amaliawindpark and Rampion.

The acquisition is fully in line with the company’s ambitions and investment programme for the coming years and it follows a number of strategic add-ons in recent years, which include the acquisition of Bilfinger’s offshore wind activities and Ballast Nedam offshore operations. Van Oord was assisted on this transaction by Kempen as its financial adviser.

Van Oord has been involved in many offshore wind projects in northwestern Europe since 2002. Van Oord has a healthy order book, including several large wind projects like Borssele III/IV in the Netherlands. The projects Norther in Belgium and Deutsche Bucht in Germany are currently being executed. Outside Europe Van Oord has been designated as preferred contractor for the Yunlin offshore wind project in Taiwan.
